Cheap and Chic May Day or Mother’s Day Baskets

When I was a little girl, my brother and I would celebrate May Day on our street. We'd gather flowers from our yard, fashion them into bouquets, place them in handmade paper cones and "deliver" them to our neighbor's doorsteps by ringing their doorbells and hiding (I think we made that part of May Day up ourselves).

Now that I'm all grown up, I wanted to celebrate May Day this year in a slightly different way. We live on a street full of amazing neighbors. They're kind of people that watch your kids when you're sick, throw fabulous neighborhood parties and are just all-around-fun. Instead of bouquets, flower seeds and small gardening items in "May Day" baskets are a way for our family to show our neighborhood pals them how much we appreciate them. These would work great for Mother's Day too.

First stop– the Dollar Tree store for gardening gloves:

And seed packets (4 for $1)

I had some simple shipping tags, to personalize them, I used Picnik:

I cut them out and used a glue stick to adhere them to the tags:

Placed a little filler in the bottom of the container:

And put a couple peat pots and seed packets in a cello bag.

To make the flowers, I dug into my scrapbooking stash.

Then just looped twine through the tag. SUPER simple.

I hope this brings a smile to our neighbors on May Day. I am not going to drop them on their doorsteps, ring the doorbell and dash away… I'll skip the bell ringing part!

Happy May Day to you and Happy Birthday to my wonderful Dad!

That is very cute. When we were kids, we did May baskets with Crepe Paper and decorated them and put candy in them and handed them out. Fun!

i could be your mother and my mother and i always hid when we delivered may baskets. so did every other child on the block. that is part of a may basket. the secrecy. you don’t want anyone to know where there basket is coming from. i can understand why you don’t want to be anonymous this year, but please let your children expereince the same joy you had in coming years by hiding. it’s part of may day
