Hi There! I really like the look of sanding sugar– that colorful sparkly large-crystal sugar that dances across the top of cakes and cupcakes sometimes. But not enough to buy it (smile). Happily, you can create the look at home for free.
You just need sugar and food coloring. Mix a few drops of the shade you like into the sugar and stir it up.
Place on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for about 5 minutes. Watch this part. Regular sugar melts at high heat. The goal of this baking this DIY sanding sugar is just to remove the moisture that the food coloring.
Of course then you have to make some cupcakes to go with the sugar.
Since the food coloring was already out– I went with red white and blue batter.
Blue on the bottom.
I know, I always overfill. I can't help myself.
Frost, sprinkle away and add a cookie.
Cheap fun.

Good thing my teeth are brushed or I would be down in the kitchen whipping up a batch…
