Making Crayons out of Crayons

You know those sad stubby crayons you have in a drawer somewhere?  Instead of tossing them out– melt them down!  This was fun for my four year old and I.

IMG_2587We peeled all the paper off the crayons and broke them into little pieces.  We tried to balance colors.

It was quite pretty.  I used a flower mold from Targe' but a muffin pan would work well too.  I popped them in the oven at 300 degrees for about 12-15 minutes.  Learn from my oops:  The mold will be VERY floppy when you want to take it out and it's easy to get crayon wax in the oven or on the floor.  The good news is you can get it up after it hardens.

After they cool off they are really cool looking.  The kids tested some and they fit well in little hands as well as creating multi-colored lines.

  1. Awesome Malia! Going to do it this week. And a good friend of mine is the N. Sound Macaroni kids newsletter editor. “When did I become a mom” must be the eastside macaroni kids editor. Fun connection.

  2. I’ve done this before and it was so fun! We used IKEA ice cube trays shaped like stars. The crayons went over huge with my daughter and my nieces. Unfortunately, my husband thought the tray was “ruined” after we finished and tossed it out! We don’t get to Ikea often as it’s nowhere close to where we live, so maybe I’ll see what I can find at Target. (Hint: you can keep the tray from being too floppy by sticking it on a cookie sheet before you pop em in the oven.) https://www.skooksplayground.com/2009/12/getting-creative-with-kids-homemade.html
