Creative Ways to Add Curb Appeal

The calendar may say February, but it sure feels like spring around the Pacific Northwest! It’s a great time to give your home a boost of color, starting with the first thing most folks see… your doorway. Just remember the three “P’s”:

1) Adding PLANTS (and flowers)

2)PAINTING and

3)PUTTING stuff away!

Here are some simple ways to spruce it up.

Bring On the Blooms

No flower box? No problem! You can make your own out of a small drawer and some craft supplies.

Supplies: Chippy Green Drawer, Delta Flower Stencils, Spray Adhesive, white acrylic paint, yellow acrylic paint, a spouncer, pink and yellow ribbons and faux pink flower. You’ll also need glue (craft glue or hot glue). All supplies from Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames in Redmond.

Directions

1. Spray the adhesive on the flower stencil and drawer. Position it (ours is in the top left corner) and press it down until it adheres.

2. Pour some acrylic paint on a paper plate and dip the spouncer (a round foam paint brush).

3. Using an up and down motion, paint inside the stencil and let it dry.

4. Glue the pink (larger) ribbon down on the drawer.

5. Add the small ribbon.

6. Glue on the faux flower.

7. Add some flower pots and flowers.

Add Visual Interest with Succulents

Take your doorstep from drab to delightful with some faux succulents.

Supplies: metal chicken wire square grid, faux succulents, moss, chipboard letter, acrylic paint and wire. You’ll also need hot glue. All supplies from Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames in Redmond.

Directions

1. Do a rehearsal– lay out the succulents on the grid to figure out the spacing.

2. Weave the stems of the succulents through the grid.

3. Use hot glue to add moss to cover up the stems.

4. Paint the monogram letter and let it dry.

5. Use wire to attach the letter to the grid.

Make a Bright and Bold Wreath

Pump up the color quotient with a bright, beautiful wreath.

Supplies: faux flower wreath, wooden letter, acrylic paint, coordinating ribbon and wire. All supplies available at Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames in Redmond.

Directions

1. Paint the wooden letter and let it dry.

2. Use wire to attach it to the wreath.

3. Tie on a coordinating ribbon.

Create a Cheerful Catchall

Say buh-bye to the stuff littering your doorstep. Stow everything from umbrellas to baseball bats to basketballs in this painted woven basket.

Supplies: a basket, masking tape, a ruler and acrylic paint. All supplies from Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames in Redmond.

Directions

1. Measure five inches in from the bottom of the basket, a stick masking tape there lengthwise.

2. Continue measuring and sticking tape around the basket.

3. Paint area and let it dry. It may take two or three coats.

4. Put it on outside entryway and stow that stuff you don’t want to see.

Brighten Up Your House Numbers

Glass Vases Decor

Pick a flower or two or display faux flowers to greet guests.

Supplies: wooden sign (with two vases), lace tape, real or faux flowers. All supplies available at Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames in Redmond.

Directions

1. Add lace tape around edges of sign

Colorful House Number Sign

Make an eye-catching colorful house number sign and dial up the fun factor for your front entry.

Supplies: wooden sign, wooden numbers, bright toned spray paint, white spray paint and hot glue. All supplies available at Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames in Redmond.

1. Spray paint the wooden sign a bright color

2. Spray paint the numbers white

3. Attach numbers to sign with hot glue.
