The Sartorialist was recently hosting a vintage photo contest on his blog. The "rules" were the photo must be an original image conveying an inspirational sense of style. I came across the contest too late to submit, but it inspired me to post this photo of my maternal grandmother, Jean Kim, that was recently discovered. How many tender treasures like this do we all have hidden in albums, boxes or drawers? The Sartorialist aka Scott Schuman is an artist I adore. His work is beautiful and the images linger in your mind long after you see them visually. Check out his book… Read More
My Wonderful World of Friends + Fashion
Do you ever feel incredibly blessed to have such wonderful friends in your life? I am feeling it BIG time. These pals have been my BFF's for twenty years (along with a MUCH missed 4th BFF who couldn't make it last night). We all went to college together and once we were in the same city, started a "Dinner Club" (basically an excuse to go to a different restaurant each month). We've been together through countless relationships, numerous jobs, 4 marriages, 7 kids, major dramas and minor calamities. But the trademark of the Dinner Club is laughter. We laugh every time we… Read More
Behind the Scenes at SpongeBob
My husband got to talk to SpongeBob and go behind the scenes of the show. I am yellow with envy! Here's a link to the phone interview Neal did with SpongeBob. You can check out the full story on ABC's Nightline tonight.
When you care enough to send the very best (via email)
I am a major paper junkie. There's a special anticipation when you receive a card in the mail or when you send one to a friend. To me, they are mini works of art. I've discovered that there are lovely ways to send sentiments via email that are almost as wonderful as snail mail. First Up: Paperless Post. They are are online stationer offering gorgeous choices for invitations, announcements and cards. There's no cost to join and when you do, you receive 25 free "stamps." That lets you send out 25 of your custom creations (you choose from their designs)… Read More

Making Crayons out of Crayons
You know those sad stubby crayons you have in a drawer somewhere? Instead of tossing them out– melt them down! This was fun for my four year old and I. We peeled all the paper off the crayons and broke them into little pieces. We tried to balance colors. It was quite pretty. I used a flower mold from Targe' but a muffin pan would work well too. I popped them in the oven at 300 degrees for about 12-15 minutes. Learn from my oops: The mold will be VERY floppy when you want to take it out and it's… Read More
Pixie Stix Magic Wands
I had some *big* fun transforming giant pixie stix into magic wands this weekend. In fact, I am pretty sure it was Mia and her magic wand that conjured up this beautiful sunny day we are enjoying in Seattle. They also make a sweet bouquet. I think the stars of these flowers are the unique handmade buttons in the middle. They are created by London Tierney. She somehow makes them out of chipboard… they are very cool looking. You can find London's work at her Etsy Shop. The paper is "Berry Sweet" from K & Co. I made the flowers… Read More
Magically Delicious
Seeing these layouts from last year makes me want to scrapbook. And stuff my face with Lucky Charms cereal. I don't usually buy Lucky Charms but on St. Patrick's Day– it only makes sense. This year I picked up a gigantic box of the swirled kind (they were way cheaper than a smaller box of the "normal" kind). I think the vintage leprechaun was quite a bit cuter. Just for fun, here's the first Lucky Charms commercial:
Easy St. Patrick’s Day Cupcakes
These super cool cupcakes were recently featured in Family Fun Magazine. They were really easy to do. I was enthralled by with vibrant colors, as were the kids who wanted to *sample* each shade (all vanilla). It would be simple to do a similar batch with school colors, pastels for Easter or a favorite color for someone's birthday. Next up: Leprechaun Traps. Max's teacher has a leprechaun on the loose in her classroom. His name is Barney and he turns up in all sorts of places. I am partly charmed and partly weirded out by Barney, but the kids… Read More
