Totally Tulip Neon Flower Sweatshirt

 Do you remember the fashion of the eighties and early nineties? It was a fresh and fun time in clothing. The bigger and the brighter… the better!  Think Valley Girl (it was a movie that defined the time), neon, early Madonna, giant shoulder pads, and fluffy mall hair. And at the center of all that style… was the puffy painted sweatshirt, created with Tulip Soft and 3D Paints. 

The look was TOTALLY TUBULAR and Totally Tulip! I remember the days when 3-D painted sweatshirts were the apex of style and chic. The puffier the paint, the more graphic the background– the more AWESOME the sweatshirt. Check out this video and you’ll see for yourself. It’s like oh-my-gawd (another Valley Girl reference)… I TOTALLY promise it will make you laugh!

Why the trip back to the eighties you may be wondering? Because one of my teen dreams recently came true… in all of it’s neon splendor! I had the opportunity to create my OWN puffy paint sweatshirt.

It was SO RAD. Check out the fun products that Tulip sent me:

 With all these fun paint colors and textures to play with, there was only one thing to do. I had to get sketchy.

I had a plain white sweatshirt on my hands… and it was begging for some dimensional paint!

Step 1: Put some cardboard under the front of the sweatshirt 

Step 2: Sketch out your design on the sweatshirt with light pencil strokess

Step 3: Use a paintbrush to apply Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint. Let it dry.

Step 4: Add another layer of Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint in Hot Pink Neon Matte.

 Step 6: When it’s all dry, you can trace the outline of the flower with Tulip ® Dimensional Fabric Paint in Fluorescent Pink. Add petal lines and make a circle in the center. Tip: To make lines, shake bottle well, hold to surface and squeeze gently. Try and keep your pressure consistent.

 Step 6: You can also use a dab of  Tulip ® Dimensional Fabric Paint to adhere gems. I let mine set overnight.

 Here’s a similar flower, made with Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint in Mandarin Orange and Tulip ® Dimensional Fabric Paint in Fluorescent Orange. Everything was going great until… OH NO! A smudge! Keeping with the happy spirit of the project, I just rolled with it and added some leaves with Tulip ® Dimensional Fabric Paint in Fluorescent Green!

 Here’s another flower, using Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint in Lime Matte and Tulip ® Dimensional Fabric Paint in Fluorescent yellow. Tip: Make tiny dots of Tulip ® Dimensional Fabric Paint in a contrasting color to add interest.

The final flower was created with Tulip® Soft® Fabric Paint in Hot Pink Neon Matte and Tulip ® Dimensional Fabric Paint in Poppin’ Purple.
