Grateful Pocket Banner

GPB13

Hope you'll enter my Trip Clip Giveaway– perfect gift for kids this holiday season!  Enter here.

I like the idea of upcycling jean pockets into a banner for Thanksgiving. You and your family can tuck little messages in the pockets and share what you're Thankful for on turkey day.

GPB1
Supplies: 4 pairs of toddler-size jeans, letter stamps, StazOn ink, light colored fabric.  Not pictured:  Crop-a-dile, 16 eyelets, string, twine or ribbon (I used kitchen string), a circle template or glass to trace, sharp scissors, pinking shears, craft glue (I use Crafter's Pick). Optional: sewing machine and random embellishments.

  GPB2

Cut out 8 pockets using your sharp scissors. Leave about an inch around the two side and the bottom. For the trip, leave as much room as possible.

GPB3
Using a circle template or a glass, trace and 8 circles on your fabric.

GPB4
Grab the letter stamps and StayzOn and stamp a letter in the center of each circle

  GPB5

  GPB6

Line up the pockets and trip the tops to make them even-ish while leaving enough room for eyelets.

GPB7

This next step is totally optional.  I chose to use my sewing machine to make a circle border around each letter before I glued them on the pockets.

GPB8

Use the handy Crop-o-dile to set two eyelets in each pocket. That's where the string with go through.

GPB9

Use the string/ribbon/twine to "string" the banner

GPB11

Here's the banner without embellishment.

GPB12

I went through my stash and grabbed anything in the color scheme I was using.

I cut eight 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 squares out of cardstock to tuck in the pockets.  Since we have eight people in our family including grandparents, I am planning to have everyone write down what they are thankful for on a square and them read them at Thanksgiving dinner.

I'm grateful for the wonderful friends I have that I've met through blogging!

  1. This is unbelievably wonderful! I love the idea that everyone is going to stick a little note in one of the pockets stating what they are grateful for. You’re the best!

  4. Thank you for this idea. My 19 year old came home from university this weekend and asked about an advent calendar. Usually she and her sister share one I embroidered when they were little – have one goodie every other day. That wasn’t going to work with one away. I’ve been weaving with denim ripped from old jeans and had kept all the pockets, so we took 24 pockets, and your idea, and they both have an advent calendar this year (cost me twice as much though as I had to fill TWO!!!

  5. I came over from SITS (getting caught up on my blog reading, I am waaay behind). I love this idea – it could work for an Advent calendar too if you could save up enough pockets. Or a secret notes pocket to hang in your child’s room. Very inspiring post!
