Millicent and Malia: Bacon Grease Cookies

Hellooooo Milllicent! That's what my Grandma Millicent used to say when she'd be talking to someone and they didn't respond. It is pretty cute that she'd say that and it still makes me smile today (25 years after I first remembered her doing it).

This weekend I pulled out one of the most interesting titles in my Grandmother's recipe box: Bacon Grease Cookies. One of my dear readers left me a comment last week, encouraging me to make these… so here we go.

Bacon Grease Cookies

Bacon Grease Cookies

Ingredients: 1 cup fat (or Crisco), 2 cups of sugar, 2 eggs, 2 1/2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon soda, 1 teaspoon salt, 2 cups of oatmeal, 1 cup of raisins, 1/2 cup of walnuts, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon allspice, 1 teapoon nutmeg, 1 teaspoon cloves and "enough milk to mix"– I used 1/2 cup of milk.

Mix ingedients together, form into balls and bake for 20 mins at 375. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

I had really wanted to make these with bacon grease but I just couldn't bring myself to make enough bacon to get a cup of fat. Crisco worked fine.

I hope you all have a "sweet" day!

  1. Oh, I HAVE to confess I have a DEEP love for bacon grease. It seasons things soooooo well, it it the ONLY thing I’ll use to fry an egg or make milk gravy. I never considered it as a cooky ingredient but NOW I will!!!! I’m SO making some of these! (And shut up, Butt! I don’t CARE if they make you bigger!)

  2. Every note and then I run a search for bacon grease cookies and I came across this one. My gma baked bacon grease cookies for us kids and it was our favorite. She clipped the recipe from a local newspaper from a small town in Wa State. Really REALLY hoping this is the same recipe. Going to send this to my sister as well since we’ve both been looking for the recipe. I specifically remember the cookies being crunchy, lacy on the edges, darker brown and almost melt in your mouth. I don’t remember raising or nuts in it but they tasted so good. She always saved her bacon grease.
