Splendid Succulents Project
What do you think of succulents? I've been very taken with them lately. They don't require as much water as many types of plants, or need to be planted in deep pots. Their roots do well in shallow containers– making them perfect for my less-than-perfect vintage and bargain finds.
Supplies: I used some stained china teacups, a broken bird mug, a marred lusterware bowl, and a bowl from Target's dollar bin for containers. You'll also need succulents, gravel and dirt. To make the little flags, I used plastic toothpicks and Japanese Washi Tape (this tape is Cath Kidson by Chronicle), and scissors.
Take the plant and roots in both hands and twist about midway through the roots, discarding the bottom part.
Place a layer of gravel in the bottom of the container, about 1/4 -1/2 inch thick.
Add dirt (not everyone uses dirt, many people just use gravel, but this was the advice I got from a woman who grows succulents).
Position the succulents– go for balance and symmetry if you're using more than one plant. Add a little gravel on top if you like.
I think it's SO cool how the plants look like flowers.
To make tiny flags measure out some tape, affixing it to the toothpick.
Fold it back upon itself.
And cut a little triangle out to make the flag shape. You can use a contrasting tape pattern too.
I was so glad to have a use for this broken bird mug.
And this sweet stained teacup.
It's so pretty how the plant seems to pick up the pink in this bowl.
It looks like a lush little forrest.
This peachy iridescent bowl looks ever better when it's full of succulents.
And another stained teacup makes a prim and proper home for these lovely succulents.
I'd love to hear you advice on growing succulents!
Linking up.
I have no advice. Except lots of sun an no water. hahah
I’m starting to grow some myself for the first time.
good luck!
I love succulents I’ve been growing a burro tail plant for a couple of years now, and some others. I really love how they look. So fun.
I’m liking succulents too! Did you see all of them at one of the booths at 2nd Saturdayz? I love the ones in a little red wagon. I’m going to duplicate that. Where do you get the plants? I’m surprised how pricey they can be, even for small ones.
Costco had great flats last week and it was all I could do not to buy more. Last year I replaced all my annual patio pots with them and they are looking pretty good right now. With all our lousy weather I have been so happy that I did not have to go out and replant. Did you see we are expecting 70 degrees on Thurs. Oh be still my heart!
I love the topic. Your topic really helpful in making our garden or our home beautiful. I love the vases. Good post !
Malia, that is so funny. We do a secret sisters card swap for three months, two cards a month to your secret sister. We try to disguise our style etc. At the end, you do an altered item project as a gift to the secret sister. I will participate in the next round for the first time. My friend did the last round and her gift was a succulent chickens plant and a chicken card. Perfect gift!
I love succulents. They’re just about the only plant I can keep alive. Your plantings are beautiful! Cute ideas.
These are the best plants, mostly because even I can’t kill them. ;)
I love succulents! SO EASY to take care of… just my kind of plant!! :)
This is such a great idea. Thanks for following me at Life or Something Like It. Following you back.
I love succulents and have been so intrigued by them as favors for parties and weddings. So elegant yet so simple! And how fun are your tape flags too?! :) BTW…your top photo is awesome!
