Personal Notes on Celebrating Hanukkah

Celebrating Hanukkah is something I had the opportunity to learn about when I married my husband MANY years ago. I’m Catholic and while I did have a few friends that were Jewish when I was growing up, I didn’t understand much about their holidays or the meanings behind them.

Initially, I wanted to equate Hanukkah with Christmas… like it was just the Jewish version. There would be a menorah instead of a tree and presents for eight nights instead of one big gift opening session. I imagined we’d listen to Hanukkah music and decorate the house with blue and silver decor instead of red and green. Finally, I envisioned that we’d be feasting on latkes instead of our traditional Christmas dinner of roast beef with mint jelly.

This was what I assumed at least. I had stop trying to put Hanukkah into the framework of Christmas to truly enjoy it. I think I baffled my husband a bit in those early years of marriage, with me trying to make Hanukkah “Jewish Christmas.”

Now, with more that fifteen years of Hanukkah under my belt, I feel that can share my experience. Hanukkah is about a miracle that happened long ago. There was a battle and a menorah (candelabra) that needed oil to light the candles miraculously lasted for many days instead of one night.

During Hanukkah, Jews reflect on that time, say special prayers and light a candle for each night the miracle lasted.

There are gifts each night, delicious food, games and a few songs. Honestly there aren’t a million Hanukkah songs like there are Christmas carols.

I see Hanukkah as more of a reflective holiday, a time to slow down and acknowledge that miracles can and do happen. That’s something wonderful to remember whether you are Jewish, Catholic… or anything else!

To me personally, Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Christ. Also a wonderful miracle, but a big birthday party so to speak.

Although it’s busy, messy and far from perfect, I feel like my family has hit a groove with being able to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas… sometimes just days apart. Both holidays are important, beautiful and yes… miraculous.
