The Best Sore Throat Soother
The Best Sore Throat Soother
My Mom got the recipe for “The Best Sore Throat Soother” from our pediatrician when I was a little girl. It’s a staple in my family… and I’ m going to spill it! NOTE: I was a child of the 1970’s and things were very different. This remedy is NOT meant for kids– just adults! Like I said… things were different in the ’70’s!
Make a batch and store it for easy access this fall and winter.
Ingredients: Lemons, Honey, Vodka. You’ll also need a hand juicer and a small Mason Jar or glass jar with a lid.
1. Squeeze lemons. You’ll need 1/4 of a cup of lemon juice.
2. Add 2 tablespoons of honey.
3. Add 2 tablespoons of vodka and mix well.
4. Pour into small glass jar and make a label.
The best time to take this is right before bed… just take two tablespoons and you can drift off. Your throat will feel great!
will it stay good for months or just weeks/
I could have used this last weekend. For three days, I had a horrible sore throat. I kept gargling with salt water, taking EmergenC, and cough drops. It did go away thankfully. This recipe will come in handy. Thanks so much!!
So sorry Crystal! Happy New Year to you and your family!
Love this, thank you!!!

Thanks Kristin!
Growing up in the South East, we used a very similar recipe, only with ginger added and replaced the vodka with rum. My girlfriend’s family used whiskey and added garlic. We still use this, because it may taste dreadful, but it works!
We use a similar recipe except we boil water add the lemon juice then the lemon shell ( with pulp and all) heat till boiled, add oregano (natural antibiotic) pour on top of 2 tbs of honey with a shot of tequila. Could skip the oregano if u didn’t like the taste, but it’s is a key component
Are you supposed to keep this in the fridge or just out in medicine cabinet? Trying this tonight, my throat is killing me!
Hi Juli, I would keep it in the fridge. Hope you feel better soon!
We used whiskey instead of vodka growing up (mostly as a teenager). It was diluted in water and warmed. I hated the taste but man it helped. I should bust this out again next cold! I think I’d use rum now that I’ve had grown up experience with these alcohol tastes!
When I was a kid we just added honey, lemon & whiskey to a hot cup of tea.
Can i use tequila in this recipe?
Am allergic to vodka….what other liquor can be used.
