DIY Pink Cap Toe Sneakers

DIY Pink Cap Toe Sneakers

{A Kate Spade Knockoff!}

DIY Shoes

Hi Pals! Well, I am on a DIY shoe” kick” {pun intended}. Earlier this week I shared my DIY Polka Dot Sneakers.  Now I am also sharing my new DIY Pink Cap Toe Sneakers. Not only were they quick to make, they were cheap! I was planning on creating a craft that was fast so I could participate in the Craft Lightning Challenge organized by Angie from The Country Chic Cottage and Carolina from 30 Minute Crafts. But the fact this project was also inexpensive makes me happy. You could say I’m “tickled pink”… ok I’ll stop with the puns.

First, for my inspiration. I saw these darling canvas sneakers that designer Kate Spade created for Keds online recently. Here’s a picture:

 Really cute, right? But $75? Hmm. I don’t think that’s in my budget.

So I set out to recreate the look for less.

 Supplies: White Canvas Sneakers from Payless Shoes, Tulip Slick Paint (available at Ben Franklin Crafts and Frames Redmond), Martha Stewart Crafts Paint, masking tape and a paint brush. Besides the shoes, the most important item is the Tulip Slick Craft Paint. If you take a gander at the inspiration shoe, you’ll notice the pink part almost has a “plastic-y” look. I wanted to recreate that in my version.

1. Tape the top and bottom of the plastic part of the shoe, leaving a space for painting a stripe.

2. Paint the stripe.

3. Let it dry.

4. Remove the masking tape and add masking tape to make the cap toe part.

 Tip: I used a bamboo plate and squirted the paint on it. This is contrary to the directions on the bottle, but I figured many layers of paint would be more effective than one thick layer.

 It literally takes 30 seconds to apply the paint. There is wait time between applications. Make sure it’s dry before adding another coat.

When the third coat is dry you can remove the masking tape. It’s always a crazy scary moment. But the masking tape really stuck well to the canvas so there weren’t any “boo boos.”

And here’s a gratuitous shot of my new shoes. So there was waiting time with this craft but if you add up the actual “work” time, it’s about 15 minutes. It couldn’t be easier to use these few supplies to make some kickin’ knockoff shoes!
