From Tee Shirt to Home Decor

Do you ever feel sad when your kid outgrows a tee shirt you love?  That's how I felt about this darling shirt from Target.  I couldn't bring myself to give it away because it's just so dang cute.  So I repurposed it into home decor.

I started by cutting the birdie design out with pinking shears.

To give the tee shirt material a bit more strength I traced my birdie design onto Heat'n'Bond Ultra Hold, cut it out, and and ironed it on, following the instructions on the package.

Next I found some material that coordinated with it, pinned my birdie design on and sewed it together.

I wanted to add a little more to my project so I got out the glitter glue and random embellishments.

I happened to have an old black frame in the closet so I sanded it and painted it blue.

That's all there was to it.  I think it will go in my little girl's room.  I'll have more from the Farm Chicks Antique Show to share soon!

  1. I will have to remember this because there are so many of E’s outfits I just love and am sad to have hidden away in the storage boxes. They’re waiting for child number 2 just in case we have one and if it’s a girl. But eventually I’ll need something to do with them. I have so many I could probably make different seasonal ones. I’m hoping by the time I have to decide what to get rid of I’ll be good enough at sewing to make a simple memory quilt out of most of the things I want to hold onto.

  2. Hi Malia,
this is such a fun and creative idea! Bet it looks great in your little girl’s room!

  3. Wow! What a great idea, and the end product is absolutely adorable!! You are so talented, my friend!

  4. Adorable! This would be so much more manageable for me than one of those quilts out of outgrown baby clothes. (Those are adorable too, but I know I would never, ever finish one!)

  5. Fabulous project! I love how you have these ideas & then you follow through & actually do them! I think you can probably tell what part is my personal challenge…lol!

  6. What a super idea! I love reusing things that have sentimental meaning. This would be a great tip to share at my Tips & Tricks linky party going on right now.
I would like to invite you to visit the cottage, and join in on the fun for all three of my linky parties:
